PROTOTYPE EXAMPLES
Mercury Target Front Body
The front section of the SNS Mercury Target consists of 14 slotted channels for flowing mercury to and from the window.  
These channels are approximately 1/3" in height and 23 inches in depth with 1/4" thick metal around the opening, which makes
the machining very difficult.  A prototype was produced to prove the manufacturing process of these channels as well as the
entire front body itself as shown below.
Mercury Target Windows
The windows of the SNS Mercury Target consists of 2 thin steel members that are welded onto the front of the adjacent
component.  These windows have a thickness which varies from 0.120" to 0.060" and are designed to maintain a precision gap
profile which varies from 1/3" to 0.080" following the final welding.  This window weldment is very difficult to machine and hold
shape as the welding is performed.  Prototypes were produced to prove the manufacturing process of machining and welding
of these windows to obtain the required finished product as shown below.
